Spock what kind of puffer is that in your sig? Spotted puffer? I think I had two of those many years ago. They were the meanest things in the whole tank! Even though they were only 1" they would sneak up behind a 6" fish and bite it. Dwarf puffers are the peaceful ones right?
There's been a lot of discussion about this on the puffer forum. I was at Petsmart last week and they had two tiny juvenile dwarf puffers on sale because they weren't going to sell them any more stating they were too hard to keep alive. They probably feed them flakes and that's why. Anyway, I rescued these little guys for $1.25 each. I already had one adult dp in a 20 gallon tall tank. Put in a tank divider and now the little guys aren't in any danger from our original fish. He's twice their size but still a dwarf. Everyone is doing fine. I have also seen green spotted puffers at Petsmart but I believe they were correctly labeled.

Its a green spotted puffer named Milton And yes, they are mean little buggers.
Dwarf puffers aren't peaceful either, they just stay small. GSPs grow to be 6 inches. DPs will nip fins and attack fish but some get away with them being in community tanks.
Yup those were the ones I had. Mine had blue eyes though. I loved them, they were awesome. They have a lot of personality and are fun to watch. I'm considering getting another one but the require a 30g min. :| I was hoping I could keep him in a 20g. What other fish can they be kept with? Back then I had two and they would bite each other sometimes as well. Must they be kept alone? Btw, at what SG do you keep yours at, 1.016? Can they be kept in a reef?
They can be kept with another GSP if they are both small when you get them and they grow up together. But then you would need a 60 gallon. Mine is at low end brackish right now around 1.010, he is still around 1-2 inches. As they get bigger, over 3 inches, they can be kept at a higher sg and yes they can be kept at marine conditions. If you keep them with corals you just have to find corals that they won't like to eat like mushrooms and leathers. I know people have had success keeping them with clownfish when in marine
Milton is in a 30 gallon tank all by himself and when he gets bigger I will probably move him my 55 gallon and then upgrade my sw fish to a bigger tank. And hopefully I can have him coexist with a clown or something.
How long have you had him? I currently have a 29g FOWLR tank with a 2" Maroon clownfish, a 2" Royal Gramma, and a 2" Firefish. I think a GSP would do fine with the Maroon since it could hold it's own, but he might kill the Royal Gramma and Firefish.
I've had him since September of last year. I wouldn't add one to a 29 gallon with those three fish, IMO its too small for a GSP to coexist with other fish.
I work at petsmart and the only species of puffer we are allowed to sell (according to company headquarters, they control everything) is the dwarf puffer.
