Can someone explain what a sump is?

another watertight vessel thats above, below, or beside the display tank (it could be another display tank) and the tank water passes through both tanks.
So it's like if I pour water from one tank, it would also g nto the other tank? What exactly is the point of this?
The beauty of the sump is this: All you see in the fishtank are plants, fish and decorations. All the plumbing, filters etc. etc. etc. are in the sump. The sump and the fishtanks water are interconnected.
