You could probably do a pair in a 30 with lots of hiding places. They lay eggs on the roof of a cave and about a week later here they come leading fry which they are very protective of. My female with fry RULED a 6foot-125gal "community" tank. They flare and look like they are "barking"at the other fish then charge to chase them away. They don't attack the other fish and beat them up. Most I've seen is a nip, but if the other fish move away they don't pursue. My tank is a hodge-podge. Tons of rocks and driftwood, anubias, java ferns, moss. Inhabitants are - buffalo heads, festivum, angel, krobia, laetacara dorsigera, australian rainbows, ottocinclus, regular & albino ancistrus(bristlenose plecs), black rasboras, kerri tetras, lemon tetras, cupid cichlids, and the giant danios were moved to start another tank.(Just what I need
)
They eat flakes, pellets, frozen, freeze-dried, seaweed, vegetables, just about anything as long as you make sure it gets down to them. Algae tabs set off what looks like an Australian rules football match!
I love these fish! Their blue eyes are enchanting and their behavior is a blast to watch!
I would love to set them up in a biotope tank with upsidedown cats, debauwie catfish, lyretail killies, and congo tetras! (Yeah, add that to the wish list)
Best way to get a pair is the old "Buy a bunch and let them pair up"

Any other questions?
