hi i was wandering if i can make my own filter for my fish tank using a pond pump and other things i cant rember off the top of my head but if anybody could help me figure out how to make a filter that way it would be nice
can this be done?

Anything can be done.
Depending on the type of pump, it can be used before or after the filter elements (container holding media). Will it pump dirty water or clean water? You only need a container to hold media and tubing/pipe to run from the tank to the pump, then to the media container, then to the tank - OR - from the tank, to the media container, then to the pump, then to the tank. If the pump sits inside the tank, be wary of heat generated by the pump that could overheat an aquarium.

I'm using a cansiter filter (I got at Lowes for $23) and it's been working good so far. I'm pushing it with a 500 gph pond pump and haven't had any trouble with it heating up the tank yet (about a month so far.) But, be careful not to put the pump in the bottom of the tank.....that way if you have a failure in the lines (or the filter container) you won't pump the entire contents into the floor and leave your fish flopping in an empty aquarium.
im going to try to use 2 pumps one take the dirty water out of the tank and one pumps the clean water into the tank and im trying to figure out what type of container to use to put the filter media
I'm not sure that what you are wanting to do is the best idea? If you run a pump out and a pump in, they would have to be set to pump exactly the same amount of water? Why not just syphon out and pump in (like a sump set up?) I do reserve the right to be wrong!
