can u list all the pros/cons of various filters/systems? Welcome all to comment

Eheim Pro 2, (I have the 2028)

Price: $179-$270

Pros: Pretty much silent, good filtration, steady flow, little maintenance, easy to disconnect for maintenance, comes with needed media, has a lot of media options.
Cons: I find it's a pain to clean and it is pricey.

dang! eheims are expensive!

Vegetative Filter

Pros: Near zero nitrates, traps and consumes particulate, low maintenance tank.

Cons: Bad idea if you want plants in the tank. You have to design it yourself. You have to deal with all the issues that a sump creates like noise, energy consumption, lighting for the plants, and maintenance.

All my ponds have only vegetative filters and the water is crystal clear and it makes for a very simple pond design. If you are interested there is plenty of info on it. I designed one on my 55 gallon thread on my sig.

Good luck

They are worth every penny. Can't beat German engineering.

i currently have 5 various Eheim proIIs, and have been a fan of canister filters for over 15yrs. let's just say it only takes 1 big mishap to make me change my mind. hence onward i could only advocate (well, at least to myself) internal filters because they have absolutely ZERO flood potential. the newer Fluval U series are pretty if you get a change to check'em out.

canisters including fluvals & eheim are way too pricey for my budget. I hear the sunset is a good inexpensive alternative canister.

I think you mean sunsun;).

You can get it from ebay.

EDIT: And I hear they are good filters as well. I have only had mine for less than a week but so far I am liking it.
