Can you bury a Visi stealth heater under the gravel? It would make it less visible, and most less likely to burn fish if it malfunctioned.

Can/should it be done?

Visi-Therm Stealth Heaters

I just purchased one of these for my 55 gallon tank about 2 weeks ago. According to the instructions it specifically states "No part of the heater should touch aquarium gravel or decorations."

i wouldn't bury the heater, as it gets quite warm when it functions normally. If you have plants in the tank, you can attach the heater on the glass behind them. same thing with decor. or get a blackground to help blend the visi-therm stealth behind it.

i doubt if the heater malfunctions that it will burn the fish. more likely, it will just shut off. visi-therms are pretty good quality already. mine has been doing it's job for over a year now i believe.

As ron pointed out, the manufacturer says do not do it. You will be reducing the heat transfer capabilities of it by removing the flow around it.

Yeah, if you bury it, it will quickly heat up the wet gravel around itself and trigger the thermostatic shutoff. It won't ever heat your tank water because it's immediate area will be the "right" temperature.

Great answer. There just simply isnt enough circulation in gravel.
