Can you feed real fish to african cichlids?

Sometimes my mom has raw whole either trout or salmon in the house at least every two weeks.

I was wondring if my cichlids would like it and if it is ok for me to feed it to them.

The fish she buys is that farm raise stuff!

I want to ask you guy what you thought before i tried it.

I didn't know if there were hormones in the fish or other toxins that would hurt or affect my cichlids.

If i could i would think they would color up very nicely!

If they are good quality cuts, make Sushi. Don't waste good Salmon on pets. That's like feeding a good cut of beef to a dog.

hmmmm...I would tend to say no to fresh fish; they are not by nature carnivorous.

at the same time, foods like New Life Spectrum contain krill & herring.

I would feed them NLS if you're looking for a quality food & colour supplement rather than fresh.

well i wouldn't do it often and the fish she buys are just as expensive as the pellets i buy sometimes even cheaper.

African cichlids are mainly vegetarians, but I doubt a few little slivers of fresh fish every once in awhile will hurt them. They'd probably appreciate fresh greens more so.

Add a little rice and wrap it in seaweed. I would enjoy that myself.

What type of african cichlids? Some are strictly herbivores, and it would be best not to fee them raw fish. Some are omnivores and it would be ok to feed them protein once in a while. Just make sure it's quality stuff, sushi grade, as has been said.

if the fish in question are mbuna you definitely shouldn't feed them fish. Honestly, I don't feel comfortable feeding that to any of my fish, and it also tends to be messy.
