Can you use......

My brother in law is setting up a 80 gallon saltwater tank, and he is using some regular fine sand, is this o.k. After time will the sand grow bacteria on it, and to try and cycle the tank a little faster, could he place some coctail shrimp in there and if so how long do you leave them in there? He don't have any live rock yet, but we are getting some this weekend.

What brand of sand are you using, or what do you mean regular fine sand? I would wait for the rock. This would start a cycle and bacteria colonization.

Thats what I did

Thats what I did in my 72g. I placed some play sand (silica) on the bottom, placed some base rock in there, then placed the rest of the sand. Then I added the water and let it sit for a couple of days (place a plate on bottom and pour onto that, will stop SB from stiring up), then seeded the DSB with a bag of live sand. Waited a couple of days then added the live rock and let it all cook with two cocktail shrimps in there (the uncooked kind which have been deshelled). Worked wonders for me.
