Can your fish tank make you sick?

Asthma rates are exponentially higher in Westernized, developed urban areas, even when the same doctors are doing the diagnosis in both areas. :)

Because of air pollution in homes, dust and other airborne 'things' cause a whole heck of alot of problems. Especially in newer homes that are almost air tight.

may i also add that the size of the droplet of water would have to be

In a respirable droplet form (less than 5 micrometers in diameter)

I dont think that there is any way that any aquarium would produce droplets that small!

I think her main concern was whether or not the "much spoken about" bacteria could finds its way into a human being.

Words like hydra, fungus, and lots of other yum-yum fish terms could make you wonder.....I guess.

I like all the posts! I really doubt she will catch anything! let her be a kid! I played outside all the time and in every mud puddle and river I could find and did not catch anything! (I live in Houston)

I do have an allergy to some of the plants in the aquarium tho' as my eyes burn a bit when doing water changes esp for one of the tanks. I am totally fine once I am done, so no harm no foul!

let her enjoy her fishies with no stress!

My mom once brought me an article where a family emptied a fish tank in their bath tub, then gave their baby daughter a bath later on without scouring. She got very ill (because she ingested some things).

FW is pretty tame but there are plenty of SW -- er, I mean, "marine" organisms that are deadly. Sea urchin spines, nudibranches/sea slugs, zoanthids/palythoa, and I think that fancy lionfish is poisonous. Some anenomes pack a good sting too.

Guy got sent to the emergency room when he squished a zoanthid-eating nudibranch with his thumb. Neurotoxin sent him into shock.

Zoanthid licking -- the next best thing to peyote, and it's perfectly legal! Uh, don't try that at home please.

I have a 5, 10 and 150 and my son has bad asthma. The tanks actually help humidify the house. The only time he has problems is running around in our nasty basement. He never has a problem in the main house area where the tanks are. I've never heard of the open sores thing and if that's the case, I a dead man walkin. I always wash my hand good, without soap, before putting my hands in the tank, but I'm always cut up from something or other. Never had a problem on my side or the fishes side.
