Canistar Filter Recommendations

I'm an XP guy myself. It is relatively easy to maintain and set up. My "stack" in my XP2 (from the bootom up) is: 1) the supplied sponges 2)nylon pot scrubbers & extra piece of sponge for seeding other tanks 3) XP fine filter pad or carbon pad cut to size as necessary (only after meds have been used).

Thanks dsbrasw!
I took the BigAls add to Petsmart in my city and they honored it no problem. I even showed them your post! $85 off the in-store price. I've always shop in their store and online as well as my other smaller fish store but how's that for customer relations. Anyway, I was considering the Jebo Odyssea filter that you find on ebay but I figure why worry about leaks and bad filtration for $50. I setup this XP3 tonight and I am very impressed with the quality and operation of this filter. Highly recommend!

I have the Rena xp3 on my 75g for about three months now. Sometimes I open the cabinet to listen and to make sure the thing is still running; it is that quiet. Very easy to put together and prime. Baskets are easy to assemble/disassemble. I only use rings for media, no carbon. The water parems stay nice and steady, the fish and plants are happy. I wanted an Eheim but went with the less expensive Rena instead and I am glad I did. Sometimes you can find good deals on ebay.

I love my MAGNUM 350, it's great, just wish I had gotten the Bio-Wheel edition

Fluval 405

I have the Fluval 405. I was actually in the market for an Eheim but a recent filter failure made it necessary for me to get a replacement quick. Whereas the Fluval was readily available the Eheim would have to have been ordered. Anyway I love the 405. The setup of the basket is awesome and the flow is great. I can’t imagine a better quieter filter so if the Eheim blows the Fluval away like folks on this board suggest then you should get it. As for the Fluval, like I said it has been great so far. The only thing I can’t speak to is its durability as I have only had it a short while.

If you are going salt, build a DIY refugium with a 20 gal tank. You will get better results from it then a canister filter, plus you will have better control of water flow.
