I know many of you will say that one doesn't need a canister filter for a tank that small but I want it solely for the visual aspect. I have the aquarium on a small end table and would like to have it up against the wall as far as possible as well as have as little as possible in the tank. Does anyone have any suggestions on a small canister filter with good reviews. I have found some small/mini canister filters with not so good results.

Actually I have found that an HOB doesn't take up much more room than the hoses running up from a canister. If you were to try one out the Fluval 105 might be a good option.

You can buy internal filters as well. Thus it would just be powe cord. And there is always a UGF. Thta is a small tank and a UGF could be a great option. Place the pump under the table and no mess.

However, one suggestion. Place the pump BEFORE the filter media, that way if it clogs, it won't burn out the pump.

UGF is a horrible option IMO, It will be impossible to get all the dirt out, and if you could see all the dirt I rinsed out from my canister after just 2 weeks, you would agree.

TKOS, I currently have a Marinland HOB with biowheel and it is thick. The filter is just about 1/8 off the wall and the entire tank is about 3.4-4 inches from the wall which has the table pushed away from the wall as well. Also, the manitenance of the filter is an issue. I have read canister filters that are properly sized to the tank can go 3-6 months without cleaning. Cory-Keeper, I have seen that idea but not sure about the diy of the project. If I can find a filter for under $50 then I would rather buy then risk the expense of diy not working and then buying a filter anyways.

How about a Tom Rapids Mini-Cannister. It is rated for 80 gal/hr, small and quiet. The only problem you may have is the location of the cannister. It seems designed to attach to the side/back and the hoses are not very long so some modification required to place it somewhere else.
I have been very happy with the one on my 10 gal.

Thanks for the input guys, but those are both the filters that I have seen bad review for. I'm starting to think that manufacturers don't have smaller tanks in mind when designing the good units. Is there anyone out there that has personal experience with smaller units?

I have been running a Rapids in a 10 gallon on my kitchen counter and have been happy with it for 10 months... Tubes are cheap, but for $20 .....
