I was looking at Eheim canister filters for my 55gal, and their GPH ratings seem extremely low for the size tanks they are recommended for. Is this just because canisters are so much more efficient? Or should I still be using the 10x turnover for my tank (550GPH)?

Looking at the 2028/2128, just for reference purposes.

I think canisters are significantly more efficient, thus the lower GPH ratings. For canisters, I don't go anywhere near the 6-10X turnover rates. Those guidelines seem pretty arbitrary anyway, as they usually don't take into account stocking levels, maintenance practices, etc.

I tend to go for overkill when sizing HOB filters to a tank, but I don't find it necessary with canisters, especially well-designed models.
