I'm looking into canister filters to replace my HOBs eventually. Could anyone provide me insight on any of the following Canisters?

  1. H.O.T Magnum Canister Filter
  2. Fluval Multi Stage 05 Series Canister Filter ( Model 105 or 205)
  3. Eheim Classic Canister Series Model 2213

I found this link which compares each of these filters specs but would like to hear from all the AC members on which filter would be best in the long run to be used on a 20g long and eventually an even larger tank.

I use the Fluval 305 on my 29g and 30g tanks. The ONLY thing I don't like is that when you loosen the latches to open the canister, you have to stick a flathead screwdriver in there between the canister and lid and turn it to break the airtight seal, and after doing this over and over, the screwdriver puts knicks in the plastic. Someday I might not be able to get the tops off anymore once the edge of the lids are too damaged.

I've never used any other kinds of cannisters, so I can't offer any opinions on how it compares to others. As far as function, it keeps my water clean and does what it's suppose to. I keep media bags over the intakes to stop large debris, so my cannisters don't lose flow rate much.

Out of the three you listed, I'd opt for the Eheim. But personally, I like the Rena Filstar XP series. They're much easier to open for cleaning, IMHO.

Of those 3, I would go with the HOT Mag.

Out of your choice's, iv only had the H.O.T Mag, and it does a great job........:)

Would the HOT magnums's 250gph be too much current for a planted 20g Long Tank?
