Canister Filter & MegaFlow

This may sound stupid, but....if I'm running a canister filter...how come I cannot hook the receiving valve into my drainage pipe of my mega flow and then connect the output pipe of the canister into the return pipe of the mega flow? Would that work or am I kidding myself?

you might could make it work but the pure mechanics could be more of a pain than it's worth. On my reef rig I have a megaflow for my sump, and behind the black strainer compartment (where the sump intake is) I plopped the intake of my canister, this lets me hide it. Since I run a refugium underneath and actually use the sump I use the canister for mechanical filtration only so I've never thought of it that way.

I guess the only thing that could cause problems is matching the plumbing to fit and the possibility of killing your canister if water level drops below the strainer line (if there is a strainer).

I'll be watching this thread, let me know how it turns out if you do decide to try it!

There is a strainer, but I could lower that a smidge to avoid it getting too low. Plus, I never leave my aquarium unattended long enough for it drop more than a 1/2" below the top frame line. In any case, I am definitely going to try it. I'm thinking the Eheim Filter 2217, whichallegly has an output of 264GPH and if necessary I could drop a Eheim water pump to up the output if it wasn't getting there quick enough.

I dont think you need to worry too much about adding the second pump as it's pretty much going to be more of a closed system. You outta look at the RENA filstar XP2 instead of the eheim though, the 2217 makes it a pain to adjust to your own media and I've had amazingly great luck with the XP2, it's rated around 300GPH so your going to get about the same flow and its cheaper to boot!
