Canister filter or sump?

Sure, if you're so inclined. I have sand substrate in my 125 so I do my water changes out of the display tank so I can vacuum, but lots of people do their water changes out of the sump.

I have a sump that returns to the main discus tank driving a RUGF.

I feel they are a lot better, but for most folks, a canister adequately fills all their needs.

I have large tanks, like to overstock, and can have some plants in the sump that would get destroyed in the main tank.

Well if i have the money i will get one of these, how big does a sump need to be for a 130gal?

ANy size will be beneficial, for my 125s I have 55s as the sumps. They probably actually operate with about 40 gals in them.

25% of the tank volume is the desirable minimum with 33% being the preferred volume.

Please note that the fabrication of the sump with respect to the flow paths and filtration processes is critical to the appropriate functioning of the sump.
