I'm trying to build an exterior canister filter. Has anyone ever seen plans for one? I've tried everywhere I can think of but most of what I find are wet/dry marine filter plans. Can anybody help me?
Seems like an aweful lot of work, especially for the pump mechanism. I've never seen any articles or links myself for a DIY, but that would be an interesting idea.
I'm certainly not afraid of the work. As far as the pump mechanism goes, one should be able to adapt an existing pumping mechanism to a housing. I was just trying to find one already done so I don't have to invest in the R&D.
I have been tinkering with the idea myself. My plan is to use 6" or 8" PVC (12 to 18 inches long) with a "clean out" top and an "End Cap" at the bottom. A clean out is threaded. You can drill holes for 1 inch PVC fitting for the intake and outflow. The filter media inside is the hard part. I have not figured out how to keep it in place. Once I get that figured out it would be simple. The pump I was thinking of using is a "Might FLow". Relatively cheap (19.95) at the hardware store. It has a 200-300 GPH output. The system would have well over 500 PSI if is put together properly. The hoses and/tubes would be easy as well. Help any?
I guess it's kind of like raising Ghost Shrimp...not cost effective to do at home (can find shrimp for as low as $0.20 each), but certainly rewarding if you can pull it off successfully.
I have been working on the same thing myself but for a 4 foot section of 6 inch pipe it runs like 18 bucks, and then the fittings are 15 a piece. I basically have everything plumbed with my Magdrive working as an external pump (hopefully not getting too hot) but need some sort of pressure vessel to pump the water thru. Anybody have any other ideas for one?
