I am in the process of setting up a 55 gallon tank and from what I've read the most efficient filters are the canister type. I've read numerous brand name recommendations and wondered what the thoughts/suggestions were on this subject? I was also wondering if a vortex d-1 diatom would be a good addition for occasional water polishing as I think water clarity in a tank really sets it off.

I have a Fluval 404 and a Filstar rated for 5 gpm on my 90 FW. I have never liked the Fluval and if it were a cheaper filter I'd have gotten rid of it ages ago. Its not user friendly at all. Its a pain in the arse to restart after a cleaning. Cleaning it is a chore. The tubing is Fluval Only and is cheap and hard to work with.
I added the Filstar a few months ago and love it. It handles well under the cabinet. Its easy to get hold of and is easy to lift and access. The baskets are straight forward and you can configure them any way you'd like. restarting the Filstar is is simple..I have not needed to once flip the Filstar over and shake and otherwise manipulate this filter like I have to do every time I clean the Fluval. This is my opinion and what has happened to me in the past. I have had Magnum 350's that worked well for me on my 135 back when it was running and I really liked them.
I have a friend at work that swears by Fluvals and has no issues wuth them and he has a small commercial tank cleaning business on the side. So its really a matter of what suits your needs and budget. I won't buy another Fluval but thats just me. Good luck with your tank !! :dive2:

Canister Filter Recommendations

:joe:

I LIKED THE PERFORMANCE OF THE VORTEX AND HAD NO PROBLEMS WITH IT.

JUST BE CAREFUL OF SOME CHINESE MADE FILTERS AS THEY TEND TO BREAK EASILY AND SPARE PARTS ARE NOT EASY TO COME BY AT ALL!

LOOKWISE, THE WHIRLPOOL TYPE FILTRATION UNIT LOOKS FANTASTIC AND INFACT DOES QUITE A GOOD JOB.

BUT BEING A LONG TIME REEF TANK KEEPER, I FIND THAT IT IS FREQUENTLY SAFER IN THE LONG RUN TO STAY WITH ESTABLISED BRANDS LIKE EHEIM. REEF FISHES ARE NOT CHEAP NOR IS THEIR SETUP EITHER.

OTHERWISE, THERE ARE SOME GOOD CANISTER FILTERS FROM MAGNUM AND AQUARIUM SYSTEMS THAT DOES QUITE SIMILAR JOBS FOR LESSER PRICES.

JUST MAKE SURE THE MODEL YOU CHOOSE IS ALSO EASY TO MAINTAIN IN THE LONG RUN. :thm:

I've had fluvals, (304, 404) they're ok. . .

I finally got my first eheim and never went back.

they're awesome... Waterflow is just as powerfull now as it was when I first set it up 2 years ago. Solid construction, easy to work with...

I have the 2217 model.

good luck

I just upgraded to an Eheim 2217 from a HOB and UGF. I am very impressed so far. I really didn't believe it was as great as I had read... but it is. It truly is unbelievably quiet. I wish I would have made the change years ago.

If you can afford it, go with an eheim. You will never be happier and never look back. I have two eheims on my 125 gallon and one eheim on my 46 and I love it. They are extremely quiet, and I mean silent if you keep the water level high enough. Sometimes I check the filters to make sure that they are still running. That is how quiet they are.Thier filtering capacity is fantastic and they are simple to use and maintain. My vote is for an eheim.
