Canister Filter suggestions?

Question about the UV lights they have on these filters...

When I first got into the hobby, a LFS told me that the UV lights weren't worth buying because they killed off the good bacteria too. Is that true?

Pure BS. The 'good' bacteria belongs in the filters, substrate and on the plants and surfaces in the tank. I have been running UV for years now, all that has happened is good stuff. I would not even consider a tank, larger than 10g, without UV these days. One almost unbelievable result is that my use of fish meds has dropped to virtually zero. Green water and diatoms are a thing only existing in my far past memory. I have gotten new fish with ICK from a store and dropped them in a tank with with a high power UV unit and done nothing else to effect a 'cure.' I am as taken with UV as the gunner seems to be.

I will make you a bet, the same FS that told you the UV units are 'not worth it' run a UV unit on every tank they have. LOL

Thanks to the thread I finally bought my Odyssea CFS4 Canister Filter. Now the question I have is that I have 5 Kuhli Loaches and I already lost one due to it swimming up my inlet. What could I use to cover this up to prevent this from happening again...Lookin for a sponge solution.

They have those in various sizes too.

Yup. A hole directly through the center. You can find them at Meijer too. You might have to put some more of the foam over the hole in the bottom once you insert your intake tube. But you can just clip some of the sponge off and place it over the bottom. That's how I do it. :D

Ebay is the cheapest place I've found the Sunsun 303B for $76+shipping. I can't seem to find any other site to offer it for less than that.

I got the 3 stage without the UV. I'm not sure if it's true, but I did read in one place that the UV in the canister could weaken the plastic over time. If that's a ridiculous claim then I'm sorry. I don't know enough about UV to know any better, lol.
