Canister filters for Dummies ?

hmmm...filters do not create nitrate, IMO. It is going to happen no matter what filter you are using, or none at all....

Mind you saying that, eheim do a good job making tanks look back with their tubing with EHEIM EHEIM EHEIM all over them lol
That's why I have a can of black Krylon Fusion on hand to take care of the ugly green plastic Eheim insists on using and plastering with their name ;)

Unfortunately, most of the people who are responding have not kept a tank of healthy, adult, breeding, plecos.
Plecos are Poop factories. Removing and neutralizing or sequestering huge quantities of waste material is the problem. Any filter that can be cleaned once a year on a community tank will only give one a couple of months on a pleco tank. Ease of flushing out the crud is much more important. How fine a filter system polishes the water is related to how fine the media is. Finer media of any kind will fill fast on a pleco tank.

Reason why canister filters hav been labeled 'nitrate factories' is cause they become denitris traps, which break down into nitrates. I lfs owner, who has one of the nicest SW collection of corals gave me a long lecture on why he thought they worthless. None the less, I still use a canister on my reef (clean that one monthly), and one along side my wet/dry on my large FW tank. The canister running on my freshwater doesn't get nearly as nasty as my SW, only clean the sponges and filter pads every few months or so. Really, any filter will become less efficient if not maintained.
So as far as canisters go, I find them to b great easy to use, and versatile filters, regardless of what that 'Master Coral Keeper' said bout them

Well, I went with the Eiheim 2217. After watching multiple videos, it was relatively easy to set up, and very easy to prime. It is virtually silent. In fact, if it wasn't for the spray bar I set just above the surface, you wouldn't be able to tell that it is running. So I now have the Eiheim and an AC 110 running on the 78.8 gal tank. The inhabitants include 5 adult L240s, 2 younger (5") L240s, and an irredescent shark. So we'll see how long it takes to clean up the water. Thanx for the ideas.
