Canister filters in series

You would want to set them both up identically if they were in series.

I meant you wouldn't want them both setup identically if they were in series. I hate not being able to make corrections arghhh! lol

If you simply dont want equipment in the tank then you need to get an overflow and a sump. Otherwise get used to stuff in the tank. You can get a tank pre drilled, possibly get an existing tank drilled, or get a hob overflow. Ofcourse sump filters cost quite a bit but most do them DIY and they can be made really cheap if your handy.
 
I agree on having them run independently from each other. The only way to do this and not have 2 intakes and 2 returns would be to double the size of each one and split them outside the tank.
