hey guys.
i have a 2x2x2 tank, about 60g...

this will be my first marine tank so im trying to get heaps of advice...
i have a spare (pretty new) aqua one 1000 l/h canister filter spare.
i was wondering if i was to buy new media for it...
would it be okay to use on marine?
i still have all the original stuff including the box, and it says it can be used as a marine filter.

just wondering if anyone would recommend a canister filter for marine?
i know a sump is probably best right? but i have never used a sump.
and im only 16 and dont have alot of money...
so its sort of a tight budget.
if i could use this it would save quite a few bucks.

please let me know if you are using one..
the pro's and cons of a canister filter for marine.
and if you would recomend it over a hob filter..
is it the next best thing from a sump/ overflow/ all that stuff.

cheers guys
thanks in advance
josh

p.s sorry about all the posts lol.
i couldnt figure out how to delete the others!!

You can use it for mechanical filtration just put foam in it and clean the foam out every 2 weeks.
In freshwater mechanical filtation becomes the biological filtration but in marine the live rock is the biological filtration. A mechanical filter will trap lots of stuff which can cause the nitrates to go up so you would need to wash the foam out regularly.

The best way to filter your tank is to get a protein skimmer. A protein skimmer is a filter that uses lots of tiny bubbles to filter the water. A protein skimmer removes waste from the water that normal filters can't. They keep the water clear, the water quality high and oxygenate the water. On a 60g a protein skimmer is pretty much essential.

If you don't want to bother with a sump then you will need a large hang-on skimmer. They look similar to a hob filter but operate in a different way.

To save on money get a secondhand one, there are plenty around and if you wait a little while you can get the model you want.
