Canister Filters

I currently have a whisper hang on filter in my 38 salt water. I really would like to switch over to a canister filter. Could any one help me on giving me a brief overview on them and if it would be a good decesion to switch to one. I know nothing about them. I am looking to spend around 120-150, Thanks alot!!!!!!!!:help:
 
Build a sump and be done with it. A canister filter will only really allow you to put media in it IF NEEDED!! A sump on the other hand will add to your water volume, clean up the look of your tank by hiding equipment, and you can put media in it if you need to.
 
Go to petsmart.com and look up the Filstar xp3. The price is $104.00. Print it out,take the printout to Petsmart and they will match their online price.
 
If willing to do some DIY, a small sump can be set up for < $150...
Used U-tube overflow: commonly seen for $40 or less (bought one for $25 not too long ago)
new 10g tank (unless something larger fits in cabinet): $10
glass for baffles: ~$10 (if you know the dimensions needed at the time of purchase, some places will cut the glass to size for you with no extra charge)
tube of silicone: ~$5
tubing: $10 or less (if the overflow doesn't come with the flex drain tubing, make that $25)
return jet / nozzle: $5
Mag 5 return pump: $51 (currently on sale at the two Drs.)
 
i would save some more money and just got with the sump. it cost more but it pays off in the end. you can add more rock to the tank. more water to the tank. dont have to worry about water over flowing the top of the tank. you can put all your heaters ect in the sump and they work great.
