I will soon be adding a new tank to our house. A 55 g octagon tank. I would like to go with a canister filter. I have 30 g with a power filter which has worked good for me, but thinking a canister would be good for a bigger one. My b/f has a 90 g with a 3 stage filter and he hardly does any maintenance with it and the water is always clear. Would like to hear experiences, good or bad, before I buy one.

Thanks, Susanne:feedback:

I have been using a Marineland 330 Magnum for about 20 years, yes the same one. I here the Eheims are good also.

Fluval 304 is what I use, I love it.

I use two Penn Plax Cascade 1500's on my 120. They are cheaper then most canisters but I haven't had any trouble at all with mine. Running almost 2 years now.

On a similar note, I plan on getting an eheim 2215 for my 55g. I was wondering instead of the carbon pad, would I be able to just put a pouch of purigen on top, because I already I have currently.

if you are going to get one go eheim if you can afford it.
also get a filter that is rated bigger than what you need, once filled with media you tend to lose a lot of GPH.

A rena XP3 or an eheim 2215/2217 would be a good choiuce for your tank. Both are reliable, quiet filters, although I prefer the latter.
