ok so whats everyone opinion for an upgrade?
new eheim canister or diy sump/ wetdry? (currently running 2 hobs and the occasional polish with a mag 350)

which is better at biological filtration? mechanical?
This tank is planted and will be getting co2 soon
and does anyone have any experience with turf algae filters?

Between the two they are pretty equal in all respects. The only advantage of a sump is that is can hold more media and/or more water. I find cleaning a wt/dry to be far easier and faster. The sump can also double up as a refugium for plants or other life.

I would go canister for what you say you have and are doing.
