I think it's a HOB :) Penguin 350, I would be looking at either the Rena or the Eheim brands.
Question, which size would I get is it advisable to 'always' run the HOB filter along with the canister or eventually retire the HOB.
What do you do?

Tank is 55 gallon, the more I look into it I see the Penguin 350 might not be enough on its own in my tank.

A single xp-3 or good sized eheim should be enough to filter a 55g. Keeping the hob in this case is probably just a matter of personal opinion. Myself on a 50g I retired my penguin 330b and keep it around as a back up in case something goes wrong with my cannister.

My hubby bought this one without letting me know last night online.

It looks ok though, he didn't' pay this much he got it from Big Al's online.
It's supposed to be rated 50 to 110 gallons. Should be fine for the 55.

*Oh he wants to know about ceramic cylinders, lava rocks and bio balls which is better?

Thanks Again

look into some Eheim Ehfisubstrat Pro. its made of a material called sintered glass, and is the best biomedia i have ever used. its a bit pricey, but worth it in my eyes. AND it is reusable.

Definitely go with the Eheim 2215. I have one on my 55 gallon and the water became a lot more clear after i added it. It is a great filter

If your not injecting CO2 into the tank, I would run the HOB in conjunction with the canister (no such thing as over filtration). If you setup a new tank in the future BAM!! you already have a cycled filter, loaded with beneficial bacteria. Plus if one goes down you have some redundancy.
