Canister vs. hang-on filter

I'm about to upgrade from a 20g to a 42g tank and I'm not sure what kind of filter to get - so far I only have experience with power filters that hang on the back of the tank.

Are canister filters really worth the price, i.e. better than the power filters? I've read some good things about the Eheim Classic series - any thoughts on those?

If I go with a power filter, can I get away with one, or for a tank that large should I really get two?

Thanks!

for a 42 gallon tank I woul just go with an aquaclear 70, depending on stock.
I'm not a big fan of canisters in general.

I'm a big fan of canister filters. They're usually much quieter than HOB filters, have more room for filter media, and allows you to control just how much surface agitation you want (important for planted tanks with CO2 injection). Ehiems are some of the best canisters you can buy, extremely reliable and quiet.

I have an aquaclear 110/500 on my heavily stocked 50G and I'm really happy with it for a number of reasons. It's silent, very efficient, reliable, handles power outtages. I feel one of the big benefits of having a HOB against a canister is you don't have to turn it off to clean the filter media or do some types of maintainence. As Rallysman said an aquaclear 70 would be good.

It all depends what you used to. I understand HOB's so I can fix them, play around with the media etc.

It is really up to ypu and what you want and expect from a filter.I have a 46 gallon fully planted discus tank with an eheim classic 2215 running on this tank. It is super quiet, and I mean silent and the filtering capacity is phenominal. Sometimes I have to go up to the tank to check the filter to see if it is still running; it is that quiet. I also have two eheim classics 2215 along with an aquaclear 110/500 on my 125 gallon cichlid tank. I am really sold on the eheims for bigger tanks. However,if you want to stick with a HOB filter, then I would suggest the aquaclear series. They are outstanding mechanical filters and very easy to maintain. They are also super quiet if you keep the water level high enough.

I agree. Along with using canister filters, you can get inline heaters, so you won't see the heater in the tank. Plus there's no chance of fish getting accidently getting burned from a heater inside the tank, since it's inline.
