Canister vs. hang-on filter

I like can. filters but for a much different reason. They seem to have less room for water to creap around the filter midia (I have never actualy tested this). I am running a hehind the tank on my 45 right now why I make a canaster filter for my tank. I over filter alot though. I will be running a scimmer (yes freshwater can be skimmed), a diy canaster macanical, a diy canaster chemical, a diy wet/dry w/ sump. It is up to your personal tastes I don't know of any (Out side of the manufactures) studdies on which is better. Just becouse I like Cans and john doe likes Cans does not mean that you would like a can. They require a little more work to keep them clean and require a whole lot more plumbing.

Good luck whatever you use.

The canisters do require a little more leg work to keep clean but probably need cleaned far less than a HOB. I have both on my 29 gallon. The canister was great for filtration but i added a HOB for extra water mov't and a little extra polishing. It is far easier to open the top of an HOB Aquaclear and add a little filter wool or carbon if needed than taking the canister apart.

I like both, I don't think you can go wrong.

Just make what ever filter you would like the home made ones work so much better then store bought ones. They are easy to make and cost less also. You can build it with more or less filtration I even make my own little packets like you would buy for the over the back filters. They work great and give you the satisfaction of the fact that you built it.

The tank I gave to my sister a couple of years back is completly homebuilt. There is not one part that was purchased from a fish department. This tank has never had any problems and it doesn't even have petshop substract. I love diy projects and once you do a few you realy learn alot about doing them better then manufactures that are only after the buck. I have one filter I made that is the sole filter on a 1000 gallon tank housed at a chinese restraunt. I built this 5 years ago for them and it has never failed. IT IS BIG THOUGH the filter itself has 4 compartments and holds 100 gallons at all times. The only part of the filter that was purchased was the UV and I am looking to learn to make one of these.
