Canister vs. HOB filter for 75 gallon?

I will be starting a 75 gallon tank after Christmas, and am deciding on which filter to go with. I have been pleased with my Biowheels in my 29 and 10 gallon tanks, but am wondering if I should go a different route for my new bigger tank.

My fish got a 75 gallon tank for Christmas and I will be placing the FluVal 405 in there. It is a canister filter and very quiet. I have been using the 405 for my 20 gallon (I know total overkill). I enjoy using the FluVal because there is 6 different compartments that I could use for media of my choice (there is some rules to which media can go where). I had tried other filters and had no luck getting any of my levels down, with the right media and the FluVal all my levels are right where they need to be and stay there. When the power goes out so does the FluVal and I have never had any problems with flooding and when the power goes on so does the FluVal with very little to no complications. You might hear a bit of a splutter in the tank through the hose that puts clean water back into the tank, but it only lasts seconds. Priming the FluVal is a breeze. The only downside I find is that if you do use carbon filters, when treating the tank you need to remove the carbon bags (by the way the media is reasonably priced and lasts a long time). It is kind of messy since you have to dump the water from the FluVal into a bucket and remove the cartridges to get to the carbon media, but other than that it is good. Oh and the seals on those filters are really, really strong.
One day I would like to move to a Sump (just for the challenge) but the FluVal is nicely priced, easy maintenance and setup. It works great and I trust it for my fish.
Hope this helps. Good luck with your new tank.

I would. As a primary filter system an canister is the way to go and money better spent on 50g and above. As a secondary filter system an HOB is fine but the only reason I used HOB's now is as a nitrate filter to grow bare root Pothos.

IMO you cant beat the magnum 350 for its performance to cost ratio, for half the cost of other canisters in its class with better performance and durability, about $94 & free shipping. I have 2 Magnum 350's and two Fluval 404's which is the same exact performer as the 405 with minor changes, and I can tell you truly that the magnum out performs the Fluval in a big way and one reason I am selling them both. http://www.bigalsonline.com/StoreCa...&query=magnum+350&queryType=0&hits=12&offset=

Thanks for the reply. Yeah, I had heard that the Magnum 350 was a good choice. I will take a closer look at it. (thanks for the link!)

I will also take a look at the fluval. That's two votes for canister. Thanks!

Marineland canisters all the way...

Go with both HOB and canister. That way you can service rotate servicing on the filters and you'll have more options for media. Extra filteration helps!
