Canning Salt for ick??

Hi all! I just added three platies to my tank and now upon closer inspection it looks like one of them has the beginning of ick. :sad: I have no aquarium salt and the stores are closed for the night, will Morton Canning Salt work or no? I can't remember if I read something on this before or not? Please help! Thank you!!

it will work. i use regular table salt

I used regular table salt for mine and it worked fine. There is alot of hype out there about not using table salt because of the added chemicals but most of it is unfounded. There are some really good links on this site that cover that subject but i cant think of where they are at right now. Good luck.

Correct, any form of NaCL is generally fine. I use morton's iodized salt, canning salt, Kosher salt, pickling salt and so on are fine. If anything worries me it would be Freshwater aquarium salt since you never know for sure what is in it or what inspection standards it went through.

Thank you all sooo much!! Tomorrow I will do a 50% water change and add 5 more tsp of salt, does this sound okay? Oh and I'm also slowly increasing the temp. Sure hope this works out for me!!

Pretty much any salt that does not contain YPS (Yellow Prussaite Soda) is fine to use. This chemical is also known as Prussaic Acid.

Many types of canning and pickling salt do in fact contain YPS in low quantities. Those salt products can be used as well, the quantities of YPS are minute enough to cause no problems.
