Eheims are great filters. Depending on tank size, I could recommend any number of Eheims. However, in general the Eheim Ecco series is very user friendly. Very simple to use, relatively lower price tag(compared to some other Eheims), and readily available. It's great for medium sized tanks(30-55g). For larger tanks(or heavier bio-loads) I recommend the Eheim Pro II series. I have used both the 2026 and 2128 with great success. I recommend the 2126 or 2128 because they contain and onboard heater.
I have also used Rena XP filters. They are very dependable, offer as good of operation as the eheims, and are nearly as dependable. They are a little trouble to prime and start-up.
Finally, as a secondary filter the Marineland Magnum series is very nice.
