Thank you, Bob!

Essentially, you're refilling and draining your tank at the same time, so you waste some fresh water since part of it goes into the drain along with tank water. In my sutuation with water staright from the tap it may be less painful, but still... However, the approach is interesting anyway. Thank you! I'll think it over.

Mp, yes I guess I am wasting a little fresh water, but the intake is on the opposite side of the tank than the return, so it shouldn't be too much. For me though, I end up changing the water much more often because it takes so much less work to do. When I used to have to carry 6 5 gal buckets upstairs to change water, sometimes I would go several weeks between water changes. Now I change it several times a week because it's so quick and easy. I can do it during a commercial if I'm watching TV. It gives me more time to enjoy my fish.

:) Good point!

I use a powerful pump to drain my tanks, but it's still time consuming. A few more months, and I'll come with a final project for semi-automatic changes. Currently, I'm playing with automatic switches designed to refill multiple car batteries. Maybe, just maybe, I'll go with one of them in every tank. We'll see.
