I've been reading alot about DIY aquarium canopy and I think it looks really nice and I am planning on making my own later but I have a few questions like how are you suppose to protect the fish or the lighting if you keep fishes that jump like arowanas, and what about filtration. A lot of pictures of canopys that I seen doesnt have any room for filters like the HOB's. How am I suppose to make room for my filter without having a canopy with a big hole on it?

To protect your lighting and to keep fish from jumping out you should put a piece of plexiglass on the bottom of the hood. You can make it to slide. As for your filters and otehr stuff you will have a hole in back, but you can make your light area on the front portion of the tank and seal it off from the open areas that you will make in the back. It is just a design thing that you will need to think out before hand.

You can also use small angle brackets and screw those into the canopy sides below the lighting. Then either lay the 1/4" plexi on those brackets or actually screw it onto the brackets for extra durability (arowanas). You can always unscrew it when it comes time to change the lights bulbs.
