Carbon & Ammo chips

The switch over occured well over a month ago maybe almost 2 now. I gave up keeping track of how long it has been. Defintely less than 3 months. I moved ugf, filter (the one that hang on the tank but it had been cleaned out w/ new media), new gravel (threw away old ones). That was before I read about where bacteria would reside. Apparently using old water doesn't help any since bacteria would be on gravel, filter media. :duh:
I just did a water change the parameters are as the following:
Nitrate: 20
Nitrite: 0.5 came down from 1
Ammonia: seems to be still at 4, hard to tell if its between 2 or 4. I would rather to say 4 for now.
Umm... as for water conditior that I use... Stress Zyme and Ammo-lock. The tap water has 2ppm of ammonia, I found that out by testing the water w/ ammonia kit.

Thats still high. Did the tank cycle yet? What kind of test kit are you using?
I really think the tank is still cycling? I would rather to see ammonia at 0 then I would say the cycle has ended.
I'm using uh master tester kit from aqua. phar. dropper thingy. Ha, I can't spell anything. :thud:

Ammonia out of tap is 2
Everything else is 0 and normal.

Yeah, I know its high. I've been using ammo-lock. It seem to work real well. My fish are eating normally and always happy.
I guess that i can't really expect to see ammonia at 0 probably looking for 2? Will I ever be able to get it to 0? :fairy:

More likely your water company uses chloramines to treat the water. You can call them and ask, they should be more then happy to tell you. While you're there, you may as well ask them to e-mail you the annual water analysis results. That way you'll know what to expect from your water: pH, hardness, Ca, other minerals...

Chloramines will show up as ammonia in certain test kits. Do as Kas suggests and use a good dechlorinator like Prime, one that both neutralizes chlorine and chloramines and sequesters ammonia. Then ditch the ammo chips.
