Carbon, with a planted tank?

I just leave the carbons in after they run out, which lasts a few weeks maybe. The dead carbons will hold a lot of bacteria. You can add more media if you want. But I would just leave the carbons in
 
do what works best for you. everyone sees things different ways when it comes to filtering. i like filter blocks for sumps, polishing sheets and micron pads. i get them as large as i can find, cut them to the size/shape i need, wash and use them almost forever. about $60-$70 for my 50 and my 30 as well as a q/t and i'm about set for life (almost). that includes pre-filters so lil guys don't get sucked up.
