My mom just bought me some CARDINAL SHRIMP!!

I am sooo excited. Got a bid of 25 of them for only $150....how cool is that?

Anyway any tips on this species? I have them in a tank that is fifty gallons, and well established. Planted - ph is about 7.7 and my temp is 80.

They are doing good but they seem really shy....could it be their new environment? Their not scared of plants are they?
Do I need to feed them with my cherries and Neon Greens or do they eat just biofilm?

I was just reading a post about cardinals last night, someone who had kept them stated that you need to drop the food right on top of them. They won't swarm algae wafers like cherry shrimp.

todd, are you saying we have bred a strain of shrimp too stupid to eat? wow. perhaps we need to knock off breeding for beauty and emphasize brains for a couple of generations. :)

Not too stupid to eat, just different instincts/behavior for feeding. Not a species that would compete well with other shrimp in the same tank.

ah. well. Okay. You clearly know more about them than I do. :)

still wonder about the "too stupid to eat" angle. They have to go to some effort to obtain food, short of the Shrimp Fairy visiting to scatter bits of consumable infront of their little mouthparts. I guess the next stage would be "too stupid to breed" but evidently they have not deteriorated genetically to that point yet. Or we would not be having this conversation.

sorry for highjacking the thread, will cease and desist now. They are stunninly beautiful which I suppose is justification enough.

I have good success feeding my cardinals small flake food. Not so much tablets. They like to scrape rocks, sponge filter for biofilm, too.
