Carnivores that stay small?

Yeah it wouldn't even make a habit of feeding salty fish freshwater feeders as treats. It's just bad food association. Shrimp are best.

What about the Gumdrop Coral Croucher? Can you have more than one in a tank?
They prefer to be solitary.

You could get several Kaudern's Cardinal, they're schooling fish that are commonly mistaken for freshwater angelfish. That will do well in a 30g tank provided proper "caves" and hiding places. They are also easy to breed.
