I was given a brand new Penn Plax Cascade 1000 canister filter. I set it up tonight, followed all the directions, and I thought everything was cool until I plugged it in. I double checked the instructions, and I believe I followed them correctly. I got to the part where you push the button 4 times to prime the canister, and then waited a minute and plugged it in, as per the instructions. When I plugged it in, it didn't seem to be moving any water and it was just making a churning noise. I tried again, but the same thing happened. Can anyone help me? I don't know what else to do.:help:

Is there an in-line valve that restricts water flow either to the input or output? If so, perhaps its not fully open? I'd give it another go, and see if you can get some water pushed down the intake tube before plugging it in.

yes, there are valves. I opened them as per the instructions. I still can't figure it out, but I unplugged the filter because I was afraid it was somehow running dry and I didn't want to kill it.

trying pressing the prime reapetly till water rushes in thats what i have to do with my 500 some times like six pumps and make sure you have the baskets lined up

I got it working. The Prime button wasn't doing squat to fill the canister, so I took the top off and filled it myself. Then I still had to push the Prime button like 50 times. I'm really not looking forward to the maintenance on this one, LOL.

The good news is, the Cascade is nice and quiet, moves a lot of water, and was free! Yay!

I did have the hoses hooked up correctly, but thanks for the suggestion.

I always fill mine up before putting it back under the tank, or almost all the way up. Then open the inlet and outlet valves and let the water flow in for a little then plug it in and its good to go.
