Cascade 1000 filter Vs AC 110

I currently have a Whisper 60 on my 55G, but since I can't seem to get the noise to stop I am probably just going to replace it with a new filter. I know cannister filters are usually better, but I don't know that I can currently afford an Eheim or Rena.

Looking online I found a Penn Plax Cascade 1000 for the same price as the Aquaclear 110. Given the choice which would be the better filter? I know the Aquaclear is a well recommended brand, but don't know if it would be a better filter than the Cascade 1000.

I have the cascade filter and I like it a lot. I have 2 x 1000's on my 90 discus angel show tank. A lot of us here run 2 filters.

its really a personal choice and what you are comfortable with go to petco they carry the cascade take a good look, the biggest thing with canisters is cleaning them and fitting them under your tank.
 
It's hard to beat the price on the Cascade 1000... lowest I've seen is at Kens fish.

I want to try one out and am close to buying one... I haven't heard any negative reviews based on actual use. Most of the negative I've heard from people is skepiticisim about how long it will last. Why people think that way without any real data is a mystery to me. Others have told me my Fluval 305 was a failure waiting to happen and that I only have a few months of operation to go before it's busted... it's still going strong and quiet as a mouse.

I am finding the same sort of thing when looking for reviews, the few user experiences I have found are mostly positive.

Thatpetplace have it for the same price as at Kens. I think I might try one and see how it works out.

the cascade is regarded in an average filter. however. remember, if you have a petsmart near you, find the price for an rena canister filter on the petsmart website (www.petsmart.com) and then print out the price on the size xp you want and then take it in the store and buy it. note that petsmart has free shipping over 50 dollars to anywhere in the us if you dont have a store nearby....

edit: one last thought- if you can wait and stalk the petsmart website. watch their prices on the filters, especially the renas and aquaclears. one week theyl;l have an xp2 go for 80 and the next itll go for 120! same story with the aquaclear 110. i bought one for 40 bucks new. they go for over 60 now...but that may change next week!

I have a Cascade 1500 on my tank, (i love it) its been up and running for a few years and not one problem...(knock on wood)!..LOL
 
meh, I'd much rather build one myself. You choose to fit your needs as well. Although on some of the smaller tanks like a 40g-75g, it may just pay off to get a commercial canister.

I've read far too many reviews casting poor light on these filters to never get one. Mainly due to bypass.
