Thanks everyone for you advice. I got an email from customer service and they said that the media basket joint is now a fixed part of the motor housing, just as I suspected.
I set it all back up today with no water in the canister and pressed the prime button a bunch of times and watched the cansiter fill, plugged it in and presto, works like a champ. I had to adjust the flow because it was pretty strong coming out of the spraybar.
I am pleased with how much more quite my tank is now. Before I had a noisy trickle from the Aqueon that came with the tank. So now I have the Cascade 700 and a Penguin 150 running on it (the Penguin will come off in a few weeks when the BB is established in the Cascade).
