Cat-proofing aquariums?

I have one cat named Charlie. He is absolutely obsessed with my tank since I got it in Feb. He sits on the hood and hangs over the side to watch the fish. He also likes to knock the lid off of my AC30 hob filter and try to bull the biomax out of it so I have to tape the lid on. I think this might be a unique situation, but that's just my experience. I will never be able to have a hoodless tank with Sir Charles around. And whoever said that not having a lid is better because the cat can't balance on the edge, I beg to differ. I tried that too and he just did a splay-legged baby giraffe pose across one corner of the aquarium and dipped his kitty face into the water.

Yea deffinitly should have a lid, i have 4 aquariums nd a cat named Boomer, the fish are his buddies, i gave him a perch to my one 30gal because he loves to follow my Pleco which is about a foot long now, nd he will scratch at the glass nd all, fish dont seem to mind, somtimes my one angelfish fights back, real funny. My cat also likes to lay on the hoods because it is warm, nd i had to cover up the hole where the filter is because he likes to stick his paw in and play with the water. So open tanks i would say is a bad idea. Its basically an invitation to the cat to come check it out. Cats are very curious nd nimble, if the cat wants the tank he'll get it, or jus wait until ur not home so id just be careful.

If a cat is curious, it is bound to get in trouble. I had a tank when I was younger and the cat would sit on the top and watch the fish go buy in the cracks of the lid. Well, one day I looked over and he had fallen through the top and was swimming in the aquarium. I'll tell you what, he stopped swimming on the top of that aquarium after that.

I read this as "just throw the cat into the tank once & he'll never mess with it!"
And I approve!
