I've never encountered this before with any of my bettas... but my current female who is at least 2 years old has just gotten what looks like cataracts on her eyes. they are milky white dots and they look like they are on the outside. she can still see fine as she readily comes to me for her food. her eyes are the same size and she swims normal.

i was just away for two weeks and have come home to her having this eye problem. she was in good hands and fed well... the only thing different is that we have been having record heat here in vancouver (i have lost a goldfish cus of it). do you think the heat could be a cause? her tank has no heater but is always fairly warm.
maybe she's just old?

anyone else seen this before....?

thanks for your help

I just had to put down my betta. He lost his fins and his scales were falling off and he didn't respond to treatment. But also I noticed his eyes were becoming milky as well. So I don't know if this was all an old age thing or some wierd disease. Seeing as how he has always lived alone in a 5 gallon tank I don't know where a disease would have come from.

Yeah actually the last betta i had in this tank, a male, died a couple months ago of a fungus (stupid african dwarf frog was the cause i beleive). anywho, i had since moved my female to that tank and she has been doing very well. she has no other signs of disease... and even has her vertical "ready to mate" stripes. its just her eyes.

i am also thinking old age... she's been with me for a while.

i dont really want to do anything to her because she doesnt appear to be in any distress... but if anyone knows anything about this it would be great help

:)

She could have a fungus problem. Kind of sounds llike cloud eye to me. If her eyes start bulging out then it is popeye. These could be brought on by old age, but there are more than one cause to these diseases. I would medicate the fish with pimafix or another anti-fungus medication and keep the water clean. Eye flukes (parasites) could also cause this problem as well.

Thanks for the link... i have a couple books on fish diseases and i checked out that link and none of the pictures look like what she has. its not like a haze over the eye... its like a soild little white dot on the middle of the eye on each eye... and it looks like its on the outside. kinda like an ich... but just on each eye in the middle.

its very strange.

i havent done a water change in a couple weeks cus ive been gone but all tanks get one tommorow. i havent checked water parameters on her tank in quite some time. i'll do it when i do a water change.

i always try to use medication as a last resort. thanks for everyones help so far

I had to bump this up to the top, because my betta has the same exact thing.

Except he has, what I believe to be some kind of bacterial infection in addition to these strange white dots. I have been treating him with a combo of Maracyn/Maracyn 2 for the past week and he is getting better, but not 100%, so I am treating him for another week.

He is not lethargic. He is swimming fine and has no clamped fins. He also seems to have no vision problems because of this.

I can't tell if these white dots are going away or not. This seems to be the only telltale reason that I am treating for another week.
