I realized that my fish in my pond are cichlids (or at least most are). I always just assumed they were native fish people dumped in our pond until I started looking into cichlids. I'm not sure what types they are so if anyone could ID them when I post some pics that would be great!

Anyway, I wanted to have a cichlid tank in the future and was wondering whether it would be okay to catch some once I get a tank set up and its fully cycled? Or will that be too big of a shock to the fish- moving from a giant pond to a tank with different water quality, etc? We did catch one once and put it in a small tank overnight (were going to release it the next day) but it died. Probably because the tank wasn't cycled?

now that will be interesting to see what you catch outta your pond subscribed here to see

Post some pics of the pond too.I doubt enough ammonia built up in the tank overnight to kill it,could have just been the stress of moving it,who knows.
How long have you lived there with the pond? And where do you live where cichlids can survive the winter?
Taking them out of the pond and putting them in a tank should be fine. How big are the cichlids? Are they colorful?
We need PICS!! :)

We've lived here about 5 years and its in FL. Its pretty deep (Over 12 ft I think) so I guess in the winter they go to the bottom to survive.

They're differing sizes, the biggest cichlid is maybe 6-8 in? They're not really that colorful, but they have blue on certain parts of their body. Might be a Pseudotropheus socolofi (snow white Socolofi) only their color is tannish (the pond might make it seem that color though) and they have 2 black spots (one near the face and the other near the tail) and the Socolofi doesn't seem to.

And then besides cichlids there's turtles, frogs, and big fish that we call "killers" (don't know what they are, and I can only see their silhouette at feeding time since they quickly grab food and then lurk in the deeper water), another unidentifable large fish, and There used to be/is catfish, plecos, a black moors, and comets or common goldfish but we haven't seen them in over 3 years. They're real shy though, so they might be alive.

I'll post the pics later today of the fish and pond once i upload them.

Looking foward to pics. What size tank are you thinking about putting them in?
