Trying to help my boyfriend figure out what is wrong with his catfish. He has 2 Synodontis decorus, 1 Platydoras armatulus, and 1 Synodontis nigrita (I think).

They are losing almost of of their tails and fins. No idea why. Is there a medication he could use to help them? They are with african cichlids and do not get picked on. They seem to be getting worse.

What could be wrong?

Just throwing this out there because I saw the same thing on my syno. Never noticed him getting picked on but one day he looked as if his tail fins were falling off. No sign on infection or any foul play. He looked so pathetic that I thought about putting him down. But decided to leave him and after about 3 days his tail looked better than it did before. Have no idea about yours especially without pics but just saying dont cout these guys out just yet.

These guys have been looking like this for quite a while. And it only seems to be getting worse.

If you're sure they are not getting picked on, then could it possibly be poor water quality? What size tank, what are your water parameters, and what is your regular maintenance routine on that tank?
