Catfish selection for my tanks

'upside downs' can be referring to the entire synodontis family - what species exactly were you thinking of? and each species lives in a different pH and alkalinity, so it would depend. All synos are African, so it wouldnt be an especially natural companion to your SA tank

how big are your tanks, what kind of fish

neither if you are ever planning to breed your fish - they eat the eggs

multiounctus - do you mean multipunctatus?

but you know..if by upside down catfish, you specifically mean synodontis nigriventris, that would be a good choice for a SA tank

and multipunctatus would be an okay choice for an mbuna tank. the thing is - the cat comes from lake tanganyika, and the mbunas come from malawi, and that makes a big difference for the fish species and water chemistry.

synos that live in malawi:
Synodontis njassae

other than that, the multi i think may be the best choice

I have pictus cats in with my SA cichlids, they get along well. The 4-lines get much bigger than the spotted.
