My mom got me a catfish about 5 months ago. It was originally about 2.5 to 3 inhes long now it is about 10 to 12 inches. I have him in a 55 gallon tank but I am afraid if he gets any bigger I will have to get rid of him. How big do catfish usually get?

Hard to tell from the pic, but looks like possibly an irredescent shark. So 40" give or take a foot. I may be mis-identifying him though. Check out planetcatfish and see if you can hammer down a positive id then you can get a species profile. There are hundreds of species of catfish sold in the freshwater aquarium trade. many of them gat too large for most of us to ever keep.

Or it could be a channel catfish....either way you're looking at a 3-4' long monster.

Eat it. Just cut out the chemicals for about a month then skin it , cut off the head, batter, drop in hot grease and enjoy. Problem solved.

Never good advice as a general rule. Too much possibility of chemicals still hanging around, pathogens etc. etc. One never knows for sure and the risk factor is pretty high.

If the fish is already 12" in a 55g, I'd be looking for a home for it. If it grew that large that fast there is little chance it will stop growing anytime soon.

Anywhere from a couple of inches to well over six feet (6'), depending on the species.
OK, I'm yanking your chain, can you get a better pic for ID?

You have more chemicals in public lakes and rivers then you do in a tank, but to be on the safe side fillet frist and don't get to close to the bone.
