cats and fish

I had a cat back before I switched over to saltwater and dogs! She always liked to chew little holes in my airline tubeing. Drove me nuts, I had to fix the airline at least once a week! I like things better now with salty fish and big dogs!!

caught my cat drinking from the tank once, adjusted the cover so she cant get at the water

and Rallysman lol your fish probably could eat the cat

Another really good way to keep cats off of things is double sided tape. A friend of mine just got a kitten a few weeks ago, and tried tinfoil as a way to keep her off the table. Well, let's just say one of the kitten's favorite toys is now a huge tinfoil ball she bats around :)

Cat in general also hate the smell of citrus.

My cats are lame and retarded, so I've never had a problem with them and the fish. The birds chase them around the house.

Well Sherman has now joined our household. He does like to watch and swat at the tank, but o problems so far. He's very cute, and whe he goes to watch the agel fish he gets all excoted and the fish all come over to see if they are going to get fed. ( cat thinking - food, fish thinking - food). It's cute.

Jennypenny you'll wonder why you didn't get a cat sooner. My wife hated cats before we got our 2. Now she's thinking about a third one. We had to put a chair in front of our tank for 1 of the cats to sit on and stare at the fish. This kept her off the shelf and from knocking off the fish food. The other cat couldn't care less.

Congrats on your new kitty. My cats like to watch my fish and swat at them occadionally, im just glad that theres a lid, because im sure if there wasn't i wouldnt have any fish.

Just a heads up, ive read on this forum that its not a good idea to let your pets drink the dirty fish water cause it can make them sick.

My little cat used to sit and watch the tank, then slowly stretch her body up till she could reach one paw and place it against the glass. My big pleco would react by trying to suck her paw from the other side. Then they'd just look at each other.

Watch where you locate the litterbox. If it's not kept clean, it will generate ammonia, so you don't want a dirty box sitting near tanks.

Make sure that heaters etc can't be unplugged by a kitten charging around.

if you use power strips/surge protectors (and you should, because it makes life easy) check once in a while to make sure they're on. it's easy for a cat to step on the switch and turn it off if they're on the floor. or keep it inside the tank stand.

i have 6 cats, they don't really cause much trouble. they like to get shrimp pellet treats every now and then. the biggest problem is their dirty little feet. pawprints and smudges all over the tank lids and sides, and my car.

One day I noticed the cat had discovered the fish tank. He was sitting on the floor in the bedroom watching the fish. Pretty soon he was leaping up and swatting at the tank. He didn’t seem to be getting any satisfaction out of this so he jumped up on the bed. He watched for a few minutes and then jumped off the bed and smacked right into the glass. Got back up on the bed and did it again.

This interest in the tank lasted a few days. He tried jumping up on the top and reaching his paw in the tank. He seemed to try everything he could think of. After about a week he just gave up. He never seemed to pay any attention to the fish after that at all. I kept a beta in a large bowl with some plants in the middle of the living room one summer and he never seemed to even notice it was there.
