i have been battling internal parasites with some cichlids i bought a few months ago, and i have now figured out where i got them from.

i just went to one of my local fish stores yesterday (where i got my cichlids from) and i observed that all of their fish were wasting away. all of them had sunken bellies, and some of them were so bad that the fish looked like nothing but a head, back, and tail but no stomach area. the fish in their display tanks looked incredibly sick as well with similar symptoms but looked more stressed, and nothing in there really looked well in general.

practically all of their cichlids were sick, among many others. but here's what's the worst part about it: the store did not have any signs saying the fish were not for sale, and they did not seem to even address the problem or seem to be doing anything about it. in fact, i'm willing to bet that i could have found the sickest looking fish in there, and they would have sold it to me.

to me, this is a shame, and if any of you are from the st. louis area, please avoid buying any fish from tropical world pets on watson, unless you want to bring the problem home with you.

Ohh, wasting sickness--not a parasite--it is a protazoa florish. Very hard to deal with once it has gotten that far. The way to go is flubenazole, regular water changes, and keep that food going through the fish.

Inform the management of your concerns and see what they say. If they give you bunk, maybe you can get a hold of thier corporate offices to let them know what is going on. Over the years I have seen this scene that you describe over and over again. Sadly, little if anything is ever done about it.

hmm that is interesting. i thought protazoa WERE parasites? i'm assuming metronidazole does not take care of them? i have been using food medicated with metronidazole to treat my fish, and honsestly i have had no luck. have i confused my diagnosis with something else?

symptoms: fish eat, act normal, show good coloration, but have a skinny belly and have stringy poo (by stringy i mean, there are "chunks" of poo floating around with a really thin string holding them together to form one piece, and yes that it gross)
other than these symptoms the fish act fine and i have been wondering if anything is wrong with them

all of the cichlids in the store i got them from (when i went their yesterday) either had these symptoms, or looked much worse (showing signs of illness and very little well-being)

would that be protozoa, or internal parasites?

or constipation.

ah yes, but the poo is not white (as far as i've seen).
good. i'm glad your fish are not exhibiting any signs of illness.
