Hey all,

Earlier this year I bought 2 40 gallon tubs from Tractor Supply to use as outdoor growouts. I had about a dozen CPD's in a heavily planted 10 gal - hoping to get some fry. I had a few fry (maybe 3 or 4) but I think most were being eaten. Sooo - I put them in one of the outside 40's to see what would happen. I added a lot of hornwort from my ponds and a fountain to move some water, pool filter sand to cover the bottom and that's it. After a week or two I noticed some fry and then started seeing more and more. So I started catching the fry to bring inside to feed and watch them grow. I now have about 3 dozen in a 30 high and about another 3 dozen in a couple of growout jars - I will be moving them to the 30 this weekend and bring in some more of the little ones to growout inside. I am just thrilled this has worked so well - in a few more weeks I will have several dozen CPD's to ship or sell locally - woohoo!

Excellent! Would love to see some pics of your set-up.

I think we're gonna want some more info. No filtration other than the hornwort? What have temps been like in your area? And what have you been feeding the fry?

congratulations!
I may even try that myself, next year of course :)

Wow, I second everything H2Ogal said!! Especially the part about pics! :thm:

Nice, I have a few 40g's set up outdoors with nothing but plants, guppies, and some JD fry in them. They seem to be going pretty well.

I'm also attempting to breed my CPD's but I have them in a 10g so I'm using a egg catching contraption. I'll check it in a few days to see if it worked.

the key is natural lighting,.. when mine were near my window they bred a lot more, now not so much,..
i seen them do the shimmy/shake in dusk and dawn,..
