Ceramic Filter Media

Has anyone ever used ceramic briquettes to replace the expensive ceramic filter media?

In my meanderings, I have noticed these come in different shapes and colors ... if memory serves me correct, their surface structure is reminiscent of ceramic filter media ... I am not really all that thrilled with bio-balls.

I think in the long run the bigger surface area will result in more area for dead bacteria to collect. IMO ceramic media of any sort becomes clogged with dead bacteria cultures too fast is is not worth the money.

Maybe my water or other factors, works great for me!

I will soon be setting up my 350g aquarium; I do not want the expense the LFS ceramic media will stick me for ...
