i can not get enough wattage in my 5.5 planted tank the biggest bulb is only 8 watts, so instead i was going to take off the canpoy and hang a 18 watt CF bulb over top. will this work alot better?

The best screw in CF's for plants are full spectrum - I haven't been able to find them at the hardware stores (Home Depot, etc.) However, they can be found at Walmart for $4.44 a piece! Look for the DAYLIGHT brand, and they will say 'Full Spectrum" on the package. THey are available in 10 and 15 watt bulbs. They work great.

okay so if i rig up a full spectrum 15 watt bulb over or becide my 5.5 gallon that should give me enough light to grow medium light plants right?

yes i have a hood i want to take the old fixture out and cut a hole in the top and set in a 15 watt CF bulb so its just over the water. or will the 8 watt floresent bulb be better then that?

or can you guys reccomend some various plants that can live with just my 8 watt bulb?

Sure. Java fern (all types), java moss, cryptocorynes (most types), anubias should all grow at 1.4 watts per gallon, which is what you have.

If you have to, you can tie these plants (they don't get buried in the substrate) to rocks or driftwood so that they are higher up in the tank and closer to the light. You could probably float some moss or hornwort at the top if you wanted to as well.

okay so if i went with myy idea of cutting the hole for the CF 15 watt i could grow alot more plants right?
